Epipactis dunensis in Dublin - 2021

Finally I could finish my post about the conclusions of Epipactis dunensis in Ireland for the year of 2021. All these information was already reported to the Rare Plant Scheme that tries to keep updated the history of the rarest plants in the Irish flora.

I'm not going to lie or to look dramatic, but, while I was writing this and recording the plants on my fieldtrips, a couple of tears felt from my eyes. I saw very worrying scenarios, that I was presuming already since 2019, that had a hug impact on the existence of these plants.

I still don't understand how the human interest is undoubtedly more important than the existence of any other living being in our planet. There are a few or absent planning or care on, at least, save minimally the other species. It is hard for me to understand how the leisure activities are a good reason to destroy huge areas that would have a high potential for the existence of a great variety of biodiversity.

I can't accept how it is right to destroy areas with native species to switch them for non-native, invasive or plants with no interest/relevance for the are where they will be planted. And more...to let them die.

In this local were found i 2019 around 17 plants and this year I couldn't find even one. The same happened with the 2-3 plants of Epipactis phyllanthes that were nearby. Some of the presumable reasons for this can be related with an atypical flowering time, that is the flowers might appeared earlier or they will pop up later than the day I visited them. However, I couldn't even find signs of their leaves. In my opinion, the most probable reason can be related with the works and maintenance they were doing on the area and I could realize its impact during my trip. AS I mentioned since the beginning all these locals are extremely under pressure of human action, and for that reason I'm not surprised with this sad scenario. I hope the plants will be able to reestablish in the future.

These locals with a total population of around 10 plants also disappeared, since they destroyed all the native species areas and they introduced what it seems non native species. I could't find any plant this year, and that might mean these populations are extinct. Lets wait for the next years.

This areas was also under maintenance last year, as I remember to try to visit it last year and I wasn't able to enter the area as it was closed for public. After the works, and as you can see from the pictures below, the renewed footpaths almost destroyed the small area were used to be 2 plants. On my opinion, this place is virtually extinct as I don't believe it will resist much longer.

3 plants recorded in 2021

In the area with less sun exposure I was able to record one more plant and now this population has a total of 3 plants. Here all the plants seem to be very well established and huge, but also under pressure of human activities. Thankfully, the plants can be easily disguised among the vegetation.

3 and 3 plants recorded, respectively, in 2019

3 and 6 plants recorded, respectively, in 2021

On local G the 3 plants recorded initially are still present but all of them with a very weak look and with a huge tendency to disappear in the future. This local is the one that is suffering the biggest pressure due to car traffic and pedestrians.

The local H was one of the biggest surprises as I found 4 more plants comparing to the number recorded in 2019. All of them were looking great and very well established, and that might mean that they must be there for longer time but they weren't detected before.

New location I in county Kildare

2 plants recorded in 2021

The bbiggest surprise of this year was my finding of 1-2 plants of Epipactis dunensis in county Kildare. Now there are 2 irish counties with this orchid. A curious coincidence was also the presence of E. helleborine of the area that was in flower later than E. dunensis. It is also good to highlight that theoretically the presence of 2 different species of the same botanical genus on the area might increase the chances of an existence of the hybrid. This local was already on my mind since 2020 due to its huge quantity of biodiversity and habitats. I was really glad to understand that my theory was right. Probably, this place is the one with less chances to be destroyed but anyway we might keep tracking it as there were lots of traces of human activity in the area (lots of garbage on the floor such as cans, bottles, food packs, ...).

Unfortunately, it has been a challenge for me to move around Dublin, as I don't have my own car and the public transport is not the most adequate for travelling to nature areas. I have lots of ideas on my mind and I hope on the next year we will be able to increase the number of populations in Dublin and on it surroundings, as well as make sure the existent populations won't disappear.
