Ervas incomuns do mundo - Unusual herbs of the world

Para quem não sabe toda a minha paixão pela botânica iniciou-se quando descobri as plantas aromáticas e a sua vastíssima variedade e as suas utilidades. Como tal, uma grande parte do meu jardim é composta por plantas com propriedades medicinais e aromáticas, que cuidadosamente tenho vindo a coleccionar com o passar dos anos.

É incrível o que há fora do nosso país, e a forma como cada cultura usa as plantas. Tê-las na minha coleção é uma visita sensorial a diferentes locais do mundo. O porte das plantas é algo que me fascina, toda a combinação dos diferentes tamanhos, colorações e texturas. É como se fosse um bosque em porte pequeno. Juntando a tudo isto os incríveis aromas da folhagem e/ou das flores. É uma experiência inacreditável e um dos meus maiores orgulhos do meu jardim! 

Hoje venho mostrar-vos algumas das plantas aromáticas mais incomuns que tenho no meu jardim. Todas nativas de diferentes partes do mundo e todas são um petisco inigualável para os insetos. Espero que gostem! 

For those who do not know all my passion for botany began when I discovered the herbs and their vast variety and its utilities. As such, a large part of my garden is made up of plants with medicinal and aromatic properties, which I have carefully collected over the years.

It's amazing what's outside our country, and how each culture uses plants. Having them in my collection is a sensory visit to different places in the world. The bearing of the plants is something that fascinates me, all the combination of different sizes, colors and textures. It's like a small forest. Adding to all this the incredible aromas of foliage and/or flowers. It's an unbelievable experience and one of my biggest pride in my garden!

Today I come to show you some of the most unusual aromatic plants I have in my garden. All native to different parts of the world and all are an unrivaled treat for insects. Hope you like it!

Acmella oleracea

Conhecida popularmente por Jambu pertence à família Asteraceae e é originária da América do Sul.

Popularly known by Jambu belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to South America.

Pertence à família Lamiaceae e é popularmente conhecida por Hortelã indiana, apesar de não pertencer ao género botânico Mentha (hortelãs). O seu aroma é fora do vulgar com porte rasteiro e é nativa da América do Norte.

It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is popularly known as Indian mint, although it does not belong to the botanical genus Mentha (mint). Its scent is out of the ordinary, groundcover and is native to North America.

A família Verbenaceae possuí três dos meus favoritos géneros botânicos: Lippia, Phyla e Aloysia. Estão repletos de espécies com aromas e propriedades incríveis. Na minha coleção tenho Phyla dulcis, Phyla nodiflora, Aloysia citriodora, Lippia scaberrima, Lippia polystachia e Lippia alba. É nativa das Américas.

The Verbenaceae family owns three of my favorite botanical genus: Lippia, Phyla and Aloysia. They are full of species with amazing aromas and properties. In my collection I have Phyla dulcis, Phyla nodiflora, Aloysia citriodora, Lippia scaberrima, Lippia polystachia and Lippia alba. It is native to the Americas.

Pertencem à família Lamiaceae e são nativas da América do Norte. São muitas vezes conhecidas por hortelã da montanha. Possuem um porte ereto e um aroma a mentol. São muito resistentes e adaptáveis ao nosso clima.

They belong to the Lamiaceae family and are native to North America. They are often known as mountain mint. They have an erect size and a menthol aroma. They are very resistant and adaptable to our climate.

Valeriana phu

É originária da Turquia, tendo sido introduzida noutros países da Europa. Esta planta foi-me oferecida e está presente no meu jardim há cerca de 2 anos, sendo que só em 2018 floriu. Pertence à família Verbenaceae.

It is nntive to Turkey and was introduced in other European countries. This plant was offered to me and it has been present in my garden for about 2 years, and only in 2018 it flowered. This plant belongs to Verbenaceae family.

Pertence à família Lamiaceae e está em plena floração no meu jardim com as suas lindas flores amarelo claro. É uma planta que cresce em zonas de grande altitude, sendo nativa da Grécia e da Turquia.

It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is in full bloom in my garden with its beautiful light yellow flowers. It is a plant that grows in high altitude areas, being native to Greece and Turkey.

Ambas pertencem à família Lamiaceae.

Mentha arvensis 'Banana' uma das mais antigas do meu jardim que desaparece totalemente no inverno e possuí um magnífico aroma a banana.

Hortelã de Córsega é o nome popular da Mentha requienii que é nativa de Itália. É provavelmente a hortelã mais pequena dentro deste género botânico. O seu porte é rasteiro e o seu aroma é amentolado. 

Both belong to the Lamiaceae family.

Mentha arvensis 'Banana' is one of the oldest in my garden that disappears completely in winter and possesses a magnificent banana scent.

Corsican mint is the popular name of Mentha requienii which is native to Italy. It is probably the smallest plant within this botanical genus. It is a groundcover and it has an aroma of menthol.

Nepeta x faassenii 'Grog'

Pertence á família Lamiaceae e em tudo é semelhante a uma comum Nepeta x faassenii, excepto no aroma: as folhas possuem um aroma cítrico. Uma das minhas favoritas!

It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and in everything is similar to a common Nepeta x faassenii, except in the aroma: the leaves have a citric scent. One of my favorite!
