Época de plantação de bolbos - Planting bulbs season

Com a aproximação do Outono é tempo de começar a pensar em bolbos. A variedade e quantidade começa a aparecer gradualmente para o público adquirir em diversos pontos comerciais.

With autumn coming it is time to start thinking about bulbs. The variety and quantity begins to appear gradually for the public to acquire in several commercial points.

A época de plantação dos bolbos irá começar a partir de Outubro e irá durar sensivelmente até Dezembro. Note que cada espécie tem uma altura de plantação mais adequada dentro deste intervalo de tempo, não é igual para todas. É claro que este intervalo é uma estimava grosseira: a temperatura, precipitação e o clima no geral, irão ter um forte impacto e poderão alterar todas estas datas. Por exemplo, se as temperaturas se mantiverem acima da média a partir de Outubro, devemos esperar que elas desçam consideravelmente para iniciarmos a plantação.

The planting season of the bulbs will start in October and will last until December. Note that each species has a more suitable planting time within this time interval, as it is not the same for all species. Of course this range is a rough estimate, since the temperature, precipitation and climate will have a strong impact and may change all these timings. For example, if temperatures remain above average from October, we should expect them to drop considerably before we start planting.

In my post today I give you some advice and tips on how I prepare myself for this time. Feel free to get inspired!

1. Avalie | Evaluate

Comece por fazer uma caracterização do espaço que tem disponível. Avalie a drenagem e a exposição solar cuidadosamente, bem como as temperaturas médias e geadas/neve recorrentes na sua zona. É importante estudar o clima da sua zona na altura em que os bolbos irão entrar em dormência, isto é por exemplo, será que eles irão aguentar as temperaturas que se farão sentir no Verão? Será que aguentam solo seco que é recorrente em muitos locais nas alturas de maior calor?

Start by doing a characterization of the space you have available. Evaluate drainage and sun exposure carefully, as well as the average temperatures and recurring frost/snow in your area. It is important to study the climate of your area at the time the bulbs will fall into numbness, e.g. : will they withstand the temperatures that will be felt in the summer? Can they withstand dry soil that is recurrent in many places in the seasons of higher temperatures?

2. Pesquise | Search

Existem muitas plantas bolbosas diferentes, por isso é imperativo que estude se as suas opções e gostos são compatíveis com toda a avaliação que fez no ponto anterior. Se tiver dificuldade em chegar a estas conclusões, investigue de que zonas do mundo essas plantas são nativas, e de seguida compare o seu habitat natural com as condições que tem no seu jardim.

There are many different bulbous plants, so it is imperative that you study if your options and tastes are compatible with all the evaluation you did in the previous point. If you find it difficult to come to these conclusions, investigate from what parts of the world these plants are native, then compare your natural habitat with the conditions you have in your garden.

3. Compre | Buy

Existem várias regras e dicas que deve ter veemente em conta quando vai comprar bolbos. Vou enumerar os cuidados que eu tenho:

There are several rules and tips that you should take into account when buying bulbs:

• Bolbos avulso - muito com esta prática que é extremamente atraente, mas muitas vezes a caixinha de onde está a escolher os bolbos já tem misturas das caixinhas ao lado. Não falando que às vezes a imagem não corresponde ao produto. Verifique também se os bolbos que escolheu não estão podres, com bichos, secos ou com uma aparência duvidosa. Sinais de rebentos são sempre um bom ponto de partida.
• Bolbos embalados - novamente, a imagem pode não corresponder ao produto. Observar cuidadosamente o estado dos bolbos que estão dentro da embalagem, tendo em conta exactamente o que mencionei no ponto anterior.
• Espécies híbridas e variedades - sempre que puder evite este tipo de espécies, nomeadamente em géneros botânicos como as Tulipas, Narcissus, Hyacinthus, ... Isto porque no caso das Tulipas e Narcissus as variedades indicadas no pacote não correspondem com frequência àquilo que depois irá nascer. No caso dos Hyacinthus é o problema está relacionado com a aparência denegrida que eles irão adquirir ano após ano.
• Quantidades - nunca compre só um bolbo (para não inviabilizar a reprodução sexuada), mas também não exagere nas quantidades. Eu prefiro ter menos indivíduos mas mais variedades de espécies. Não se esqueça que muitos bolbos multiplicam-se assexuadamente, ou seja, ano após ano poderá encontrar novos bolbos que nasceram à volta do bolbo mãe.

• Bulbs loose - a lot with this practice that is extremely attractive, but often the box from which you are choosing the bulbs already have mixtures of the boxes next to. Not saying that sometimes the image does not match the product. Also check that the bulbs you have chosen are not rotten, with bugs, dry or with a dubious appearance. Signs of shoots are always a good starting point.
• Packaged bulbs - again, the image may not match the product. Observe carefully the condition of the bulbs that are inside the package, taking into account exactly what I mentioned in the previous point.
• Hybrid species and varieties - wherever possible avoid such species, especially in botanical genera such as Tulips, Narcissus, Hyacinthus, ... This is because in the case of Tulips and Narcissus the varieties indicated in the package do not often correspond to what will later born. In the case of the Hyacinthus the problem is related to the disfigured appearance that they will acquire year after year.
• Quantities - never buy just one bulb (so as not to make sex reproduction unfeasible), but also do not overdo it in quantities. I prefer to have fewer individuals but more varieties of species. Do not forget that many bulbs multiply asexually, that is, year after year you may find new bulbs that were born around the bulb mother.

4. Plante | Plant

Faça uma lista com os nomes científicos dos bolbos à medida que os vai adquirindo. Averigúe novamente as condições e requisitos de cada espécie através de uma pesquisa: quantidade de água, profundidade de plantação do bolbos, inclinação do bolbo, espaçamento entre bolbos, exposição solar, drenagem, pH do solo, doenças e predadores, ... 

Divirta-se e seja paciente a plantar todos os bolbos e, principalmente, não deixe passar esta época. Faça tudo com antecedência e apresse-se porque depois só daqui a um ano. As espécies começarão a florescer a partir de Janeiro/Fevereiro e acredite que será recompensado com um bonito espectáculo no seu jardim.

Make a list of the scientific names of the bulbs as you get them. Find out again the conditions and requirements of each species through a survey: water quantity, bulb planting depth, bulb tilt, bulb spacing, sun exposure, drainage, soil pH, diseases and predators, ...

Have fun and be patient to plant all the bulbs and, especially, do not let this season pass. Do everything in advance and hurry up because later only in a year. The species will start to bloom from January / February and believe that you will be rewarded with a beautiful show in your garden.
