Greenway Walk - Primula genus

We are practically in the spring, which means that we are entering the time of year with more blooms. Little by little, the fields begin to fill with color, and our eyes come into action!

I recently made the beautiful Greenway Walk, a 6,5km walking route from Blessington to Russborough (more info here), county Wicklow, Ireland. Different ecosystems can be observed along the way, and the forests  were the ones that impressed me the most. Everything is very green, and there is lots of water and some wonderful flowers.

The Primulas were undoubtedly the stars of the day. They belong to the family Primulaceae, and there are, with the natural hybrids, some 4 or 5 native species in Ireland. At this stage P. vulgaris - aka P. acaulis - was the only one I found, also the only species present in Portuguese flora. The scientific name of this plant derives (obviously from Latin) and means one of the first flowers to appear in spring, and 'vulgaris' means that it is common. It is native to the western and southern parts of Europe, and is also present in northwestern Africa and southwest Asia.

Its flowering season begins roughly from March and extends until May. The flowers are pale yellow and their stalks have no leaves. Its leaves are large and crinkled, reaching up to more than 10cm.

The scenarios are idyllic and extremely inviting. There are several recreational and ludic areas, creating great options to fill the weekend. I always like to remind you to respect nature throughout your adventures.

Not just Primulas, but other flowers are already starting to color a little out there. Members of the families Lamiaceae, Oxalidaceae and Ranunculaceae were also photographed by me
