Epipactis dunensis in Ireland

The species Epipactis dunensis was found for the first time in Irish territory, in county Dublin. This rare orchid (Orchidaceae family) was considered until then endemic of the United Kingdom.

My name is Gonçalo Santos, I'm portuguese, and I am the author of this week's unexpected discovery. I am recording the irish wildflowers and Europeans orchids, and in my spare time I have devoted myself to finding the species of Epipactis native to Ireland. In an attempt to find Epipactis helleborine, I found this species never before seen in Ireland. I published a photograph in my instagram account of what I thought was E. helleborine, when Michael Waller very kindly warned me that the identification was wrong because the species is actually E. dunensis. My special thanks!

I have a bachelor in chemistry and I came to live in Ireland hoping to find job opportunities in what gives me the most pleasure in life: botany. For those who do not know I joined this great world about 6 years ago when I started to create my garden in Portugal, that counts with more than 500 species from differente habitats living together in a space of 90 square meters. Since then I have never stopped! I started the creation of my blog and all this project called 'Something in the yard' that aims to excite everyone to create, care and save the botany species, essentially the native ones of their country, region or continent. Followed the Facebook and Instagram pages that helped Something in the Yard get even closer to others, and more recently on Twitter. I have created many new friends and contacts with the same interests as mr, and I began to dedicate myself in parallel to finding and registering the European native species, starting with Portugal. Everything can be found on my blog.

Thousands of hours I have dedicated to learning and to understand on my own all the themes related to my involvements that I mentioned: creation and maintenance of a garden; propagation; taxonomy; European flora, ... A lot of money invested mainly in my garden, but also in my trips to identify wild species. Lots of energy, patience and persistence to find the tiny or rare species A in the giant area B.  I always want to do more, find more, and especially learn more. I want very much the opportunity to start a career that I have always wanted in one of these scientific areas.

This discovery has come to prove a number of things, but I will mention only two: first it shows that you don't need to be a bachelor or master in a specific academic area, to be as or more valuable than one of these specialists. Anyone can do science, as long as having passion and will, and therefore the opportunities should be distributed in a more humane and not exclusively academic way. Second, there are no borders! Or, in other words, talking about endemism or extinction is always very extreme, because there is no total control on frontiers, in the dispersion of species and in all areas of the world. Of course they are very useful and valid terms, but by this I mean that it is not impossible to rediscover an extinct species or find for the first time in the local A a species supposedly endemic to the local B. Science is this: unpredictable, enigmatic, universal, unlimited, and especially incredible!

Returning to the subject Epipactis, I came to leave you 5 more photos that I took:

I will give you one last detail: both images are photographs of the species E. dunensis but photographed in 5 different places, that is, so far I have registered 5 sites in the county of Dublin where this species exists. Good reasons that show that opportunities should not be attributed solely according to an academic background. Many skills and knowledge can be acquired on our own, so I hope I can give a positive influence on all of those who share the same interests as I do.

To finish in greatness, I come to announce that for the first time this week I also saw in the wild the rare E. phyllanthes in an area of county Dublin that had not yet been found (according to the BSBI maps). I was overwhelmed with this discovery!

Epipactis phyllanthes

I want to emphasize that all these species are critically endangered due to their rarity and, of course, to human action, which has been decimating any piece of nature ever since. Let's respect species and protect them. It is a work that only has meaning if it is done by everyone together, and that it should be present at any time and place of the day, and with any living being.

Thank you very much for the support and interest of several people have expressed, but for now I will keep the information reserved until further studies. Everything is very recent and I want to spend more time analyzing the species so that there is no doubt of its identification. I am sure you understand the situation and my position and as soon as there are sufficient, official and credible developments, all this discovery and study will be made public in the appropriate places. Further information is needed to guarantee the ID of this plant. For now it is just a strong hint by some specialists in this field.

Vamos respeitar as espécies e protegê-las. For now it is just a strong hintch by some specialists in the field.
