Vida Selvagem do Algarve - Algarve's Wildlife 2019

Quem me conhece sabe que eu não gosto nada de praia. Ora, não gostar no sentido que não gosto de 'perder' tempo a apanhar banhos de sol ou a mergulhar em água que para mim está sempre fria. Como tudo na vida, muitas vezes temos de fazer as vontades às pessoas que são importantes para nós, e, como tal, foi sempre imperativo arranjar entretens que sejam do meu agrado cada vez que vou à praia.

Claro que não é difícil perceber onde quero chegar: flora e fauna! Praia para mim é sinónimo de registar os diversos seres vivos que podemos encontrar neste tipo de habitat. São ecossistemas muito ricos quase sempre protegidos por lei, e que compreendem zonas desde matas, dunas, sapais, e a zona propriamente dita da praia que faz fronteira entre a areia (zona terrestre) e a água do mar/oceano. Todas estas áreas abrigam uma imensidão de espécies que, consoante a altura do ano, poderão ser vistas.

No final de Agosto deste ano estive em Portugal no Algarve e dediquei-me a procurar espécies na reserva natural da Ria Formosa. Esta reserva natural tem uma extensão de cerca de 60km e está repleta de diferentes habitats e cenários paradisíacos, tem um importantíssimo papel a nível natural, mas também a nível cultura, gastronómico ou turístico. O meu grande objectivo foi fotografar o camaleão algarvio (Chamaeleo chamaelon).

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't like the beach at all. Well, I don't appreciate it in the sense that I don't like to 'wasting' time sunbathing or diving in water that is always cold for me. Like everything else in life, we often have to do the will to the important people for us, and as such, it has always been imperative to find entertainments that please me every time I have to go to the beach.

Of course it is not difficult to discover what kind of hobbys I love: flora and fauna! Beach to me is synonymous of registering the various living beings we can find in this type of habitat. These are very rich ecosystems, almost always protected by law, and include areas such as woods, dunes, marshes, and the area of the beach that borders the sand (land area) and sea/ocean water. All of these areas are home to a multitude of species that, depending on the time of year, can be seen.

At the end of August this year I was in Portugal in the Algarve and dedicated myself to searching for species in the Ria Formosa. This natural park has a length of about 60km and is full of different habitats and paradisiacal scenarios, and has a very important role at the natural level, but also at the cultural, gastronomic or tourist levels. My main goal was to find and photograph the Common chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaelon).

Foi uma luta incansável de 5 dias, e apenas encontrei um camaleão. Foi uma vitória pessoal visto que a última vez que tinha encontrado um no seu habitat natural foi há muitos anos atrás quando eu era criança e o meu avô encontrou um numas dunas algarvias. Reencontrar o camaleão foi para mim um reviver de várias memórias de infância e uma dedicatória ao meu avô, que infelizmente faleceu este ano, pouco tempo depois desta minha visita ao Algarve. (Um grande beijinho com muito amor e saudades para o meu avô)

O camaleão existe em Portugal unicamente em algumas zonas algarvias e é um dos 28 repteis existentes em Portugal. Ele está criticamente ameaçado devido por exemplo à consequente destruição do seu habitat. Como tal, não irei revelar a localização das fotografias que tirei. Como sempre, aconselho-vos a conhecer e a desfrutar a natureza, sempre de forma cívica e respeitadora das demais regras associadas a cada zona. Fiquem então a conhecer as fotografias de alguns seres vivos que tive a possibilidade de registar, e inspirem-se com algumas boas razões para visitar o Algarve.

It was a tireless fight of 5 days, and just found one chameleon. It was a personal victory since the last time I had found one in its natural habitat was many years ago when I was a child and my grandfather found one in dunes. Rediscovering the chameleon was for me a revival of various childhood memories and a dedication to my grandfather, who unfortunately passed away this year, shortly after my visit to the Algarve (A big kiss with much love and miss for my granfather).

Chameleon exists in Portugal only in some Algarve areas and it is one of the 28 reptiles in Portugal. It is critically endangered due to the consequent destruction of its habitat. As such, I will not reveal the location of the photos I took. As always, I advise you to know and enjoy nature, always with a civic behaviour and respecting the rules associated with this kind of habitats and species. Get to know the photographs of some living beings that I had the possibility to record, and be inspired by some good reasons to visit the Algarve.

Bivalvia, reptilia, batoidea. insecta e echinodermata são os grupos de seres vivos que registei. Infelizmente fiquei bastante limitado porque não tinha comigo a minha lente telescópica para fotografar animais a longa distância.

A grande estrela do reino Plantae que eu quis rever foi o Pancratium maritimum. Encontrei poucos em flor, visto que a maioria já estava a dar semente. Pouquíssimas espécies em flor nesta altura do ano, devido às temperaturas elevadas e à seca que se fazia sentir desde há algumas semanas.

The great star of the Plantae kingdom that I wanted to review was Pancratium maritimum. I found few in bloom, since most were already giving seed. Very few species in bloom at this time of year, due to the high temperatures and drought that was felt since a few weeks ago.
