Ophrys apifera in Dublin

O. holoserica) e a O. sphegodes (total 4 espécies). Em Portugal existem 11 Ophrys diferentes: O. apifera, O. sphegodes, O. scolopax, O. tenthredinifera, O. speculum ssp. speculum, O. speculum ssp. lusitanica, O. fusca ssp. fusca, O. fusca ssp dyris, O fusca ssp. bilunulata, O. lutea e O. bombyliflora.

Yesterday, after finishing work, I did a small and quick field trip with a very specific goal of finding a certain plant (I will talk about this soon). I was not counting that once I started my adventure I spotted a population of 15-20 Bee Orchids (Ophrys apifera).

I was extremely excited and I'm going to explain you why. Last time I saw this orchid was in 2019 in Lisbon (lots and lots of them) and in The Burren, Ireland (I just found 1 or 2 plants). Basically, I knew there were some recordings of this species in county Dublin but, until today, I haven't found them.

In Ireland O. apfera and O. insectifera are the only 2 Ophrys you can find in the wild. In the UK, these 2 plus O. fuciflora (aka. O. holoserica) and O. sphegodes can be found in the wild (total of 4 species). In Portugal there are 11 different species: O. apiferaO. sphegodesO. scolopaxO. tenthrediniferaO. speculum ssp. speculumO. speculum ssp. lusitanicaO. fusca ssp. fuscaO. fusca ssp dyrisO fusca ssp. bilunulataO. lutea and O. bombyliflora.

Ophrys apifera

Irei mencionar 22 espécies diferentes uma vez que estou a basear-me no livro: Field Guide to The Orchids of Europe and the Mediterranean' by Rolf Kühn, Henrik Æ. Pedersen e Philip Cribb.

The Ophrys genus is the biggest one inside subtribe Orchidinae, and they are widespread across Europe, North Africa, Canary Islands, Caucasus and Middle East. The Mediterranean region is the most rich in this genus. The number of different species accepted inside Ophrys genus varies according to the author. I'm going to mention around 22 different species as I'm following the book: 'Field Guide to The Orchids of Europe and the Mediterranean' by Rolf Kühn, Henrik Æ. Pedersen and Philip Cribb. As all orchids they belong to Orchidaceae family

The reproduction of Bee Orchid occurs in 2 forms: self-pollination the preferential one and the most observed way of reproduction in the northern areas of its distribuition; the solitary bee Eucera longicornis helps the pollination mostly in the Mediterranean region. This Orchid emits allomones that mimic the scent of the female bee.

I was so surprised and happy with this finding. I detected them automatically, it seems my eyes are still trained to spot them. After I did a precise check on that small area and in the end there were more than 15 individuals, most of them with big size. Hope you like it!
